Odoo ERP for Construction

Construction loses money between the estimate and the invoice. The BOQ is built in Excel, purchase happens on site, labour is counted on paper, and nobody can say what a project has really cost until it is finished.

Odoo connects projects, procurement, timesheets, documents and accounting so project cost is visible while you can still act on it.

Definition

What is Odoo ERP for construction?

Odoo ERP for construction connects project execution with the procurement, labour and accounting that pay for it. Projects and tasks carry the work breakdown, purchase orders and vendor bills are raised against the project, timesheets post labour cost to it, and the analytic account rolls all three into one number you can compare against the BOQ while the job is still running.

The single configuration decision that decides whether construction costing works in Odoo is the analytic account structure. Set it per project, per phase or per cost head before anything is booked — changing it later means re-posting history.

Analytic account
The cost bucket every purchase, bill and timesheet is tagged to. This is what makes project profitability real.
BOQ
Bill of quantities. In Odoo this usually lives as a project task structure or a quotation template with sections.
Work breakdown
Project → phase → task. Deep enough to control, shallow enough that site staff will actually update it.
Retention & RA bills
Running account billing with retention held back. Needs deliberate configuration; it is not a default.

What we implemented

Integrated BOQ management, procurement, project execution, billing and financial reporting on a connected Odoo ERP platform.

Why it mattered

BOQ, site procurement and billing had been three separate records of the same job. Bringing them onto one project meant the cost figure was available before the project closed, not after.

Modules

Odoo construction modules for your business

Odoo connects the applications a construction business runs on: projects and planning for execution, purchase for materials and subcontractors, timesheets for labour, documents for drawings and approvals, field service for site work, and accounting underneath all of it.

Project

Projects, phases and tasks carrying the work breakdown, with the analytic account that every cost will be tagged to.

Planning

Scheduling site teams and equipment against task dates, so a delay on one activity is visible to the people it blocks.

Purchase management

RFQs, vendor pricelists and approval limits, with every order raised against a project so site procurement stops being invisible.

Timesheets

Labour booked to tasks and approved by supervisors, turning headcount on site into a cost figure on the project.

How Odoo connects construction operations

A purchase order raised for a site is tagged to that project. The vendor bill follows it. The timesheet a supervisor approves posts labour to the same account. Project profitability is then a report rather than a reconstruction.

  • Material purchases booked against the project, not a general expense head
  • Subcontractor bills tracked per work order with retention held back
  • Labour cost from approved timesheets, posted to the same project
  • Drawings, approvals and site photos attached to the task they belong to

Expertise · how we work

What we settle in week one of a construction implementation

These are the configuration decisions that are cheap to make now and structural to change later. We walk through each one before a single record is migrated.

  1. Analytic account structure

Per project, per phase, or per cost head. Everything downstream — purchase, bills, timesheets, profitability — is tagged to this, and changing it after transactions exist means re-posting.

  2. How deep the work breakdown goes

Deep structures give better control and are abandoned by site staff. We set the depth your supervisors will genuinely maintain, not the one that looks impressive.

  3. Who raises site purchase orders

Site engineer, store keeper or head office, and above what value approval is needed. Getting this wrong means either a bottleneck or uncontrolled spend.

  4. Retention and RA billing rules

Running account bills with retention held and released on milestones are not a default. The percentages and release triggers are configured deliberately.

  5. Subcontractor treatment

As vendors with purchase orders, or as a service cost on the project. This decides how their bills, retention and TDS are handled.

  6. Timesheet approval chain

Labour cost is only as true as timesheet discipline. We decide who enters, who approves, and on what day of the week before go-live.

  7. Material issue from store to site

Whether stock moves through an internal location per site or is expensed at purchase. The first gives you real consumption; the second is simpler and tells you less.

Business models

Odoo for different construction business models

The right configuration depends on how your business actually operates, not on your sector label. Two companies with the same description on paper often need different warehouse steps, different approval chains and different reports.

  • Project-based contractors — One large job at a time, deep work breakdown, running account billing with retention.
  • Contract-driven operations — Multiple concurrent contracts with different payment terms and milestone certification.
  • Field-based operations — Many small sites, mobile teams, and work closed from a phone rather than an office.
  • Labour and resource intensive — Cost dominated by workforce and equipment, so timesheet discipline decides whether costing is real.
  • Procurement intensive — Material cost dominates; vendor pricing, site delivery and reconciliation are the control points.
  • Document heavy — Regulated or client-audited work where drawing revisions and approvals have to be traceable.

Where Odoo needs work for construction businesses

We would rather say this before you buy licences than after. These are the areas where we scope real development, recommend a bolt-on, or tell you Odoo is the wrong tool.

Detailed BOQ estimating

Odoo holds the BOQ structure well but is not an estimating package with rate libraries and build-ups. Serious estimating usually stays in a specialist tool that feeds Odoo.

Critical path scheduling

Odoo Planning schedules resources; it is not Primavera or MS Project. Complex dependency networks and float analysis need an external scheduler.

Equipment hire and plant costing

Internal plant charged out to projects by hour or day needs custom configuration. It is achievable and it is not standard.

Statutory certification formats

Client-specific measurement books and certification formats are often fixed by contract and need custom QWeb report development.

Offline site working

Field Service handles intermittent connectivity; genuinely offline sites for days at a time need a different approach.

Labour compliance records

Statutory labour registers and site-level compliance vary by state and usually need either customisation or a separate system.

Our services

Odoo construction ERP implementation services

Implementing Odoo for construction needs more than installing the applications. Your ERP should reflect how your operations actually run.

  1. Requirement analysis

Understand your project types, work breakdown, BOQ format, procurement approvals, billing and retention terms, and how labour is recorded on site today.

  2. Workflow design

Map project, purchase, timesheet and billing flows onto Odoo, and fix the analytic account structure before anything else is configured.

  3. Odoo configuration

Configure the applications above around your requirements rather than installing them at their defaults.

  4. Data migration

Prepare and migrate masters, open items and opening balances. Data cleaning is scoped explicitly, because it is usually the largest single task. See Odoo migration.

  5. Integration & customisation

Connect the systems you are keeping and build only what configuration genuinely cannot reach. See integration and customization.

  6. Testing & user training

Your own team runs real transactions in a test database before go-live. Role-based training for the people who key them daily. See Odoo training.

  7. Go-live & support

Cutover planning, opening balance freeze, hypercare in the first weeks, then ongoing support and AMC.

Trust · what it costs

What an Odoo implementation costs for construction businesses

We do not publish one implementation price, because the same application list costs very differently depending on the factors below. We do publish what moves the number, and the price is fixed in writing before work starts.

  • Number of concurrent projectsDrives analytic structure, reporting and how much approval configuration is required.
  • Billing complexitySimple invoicing is quick. Running account bills with retention, milestones and client certification formats are development.
  • Subcontractor volumeVendor management, work orders, retention and TDS handling all scale with this.
  • Site connectivityField and mobile working changes training, hardware and sometimes architecture.
  • Document control requirementsDrawing revision control and audit trails for regulated clients add configuration and training.
  • Data quality in your BOQsConsistent item codes migrate quickly; free-text BOQ lines across years are the largest single task.

FAQ

Odoo ERP for construction: frequently asked questions

What is Odoo ERP for construction?
Odoo ERP for construction connects project execution with procurement, labour and accounting. Projects carry the work breakdown, purchases and vendor bills are raised against the project, timesheets post labour cost to it, and analytic reporting turns all three into project profitability.
Can Odoo manage construction projects?
Yes. Projects, phases and tasks carry the work breakdown; Planning schedules teams and equipment against task dates; Documents holds drawings and approvals against the task they belong to.
Can Odoo connect construction projects with purchasing and accounting?
Yes, and this is the main reason construction businesses adopt it. Purchase orders and vendor bills are tagged to the project through its analytic account, so material cost appears on project profitability as it is incurred rather than at closure.
Can Odoo track construction workforce time and project activities?
Yes. Timesheets book labour to tasks with a supervisor approval step, and the approved time posts cost to the same analytic account as materials. The accuracy depends entirely on timesheet discipline, which is why we agree the approval chain before go-live.
Can Odoo handle running account bills and retention?
Yes, with deliberate configuration. RA billing with a retention percentage held back and released against milestones is not a default setting; the percentages, release triggers and certification format are configured during implementation.
Can Odoo manage construction project documents and field operations?
Yes. Documents stores drawings, specifications, measurement sheets and site photographs against the relevant task, and Field Service schedules and closes site visits and snag lists from a mobile device.
Does Odoo replace our estimating software?
Usually not, and we will say so. Odoo holds the BOQ structure and the resulting project, but detailed estimating with rate libraries and build-ups is better kept in a specialist tool that feeds Odoo once the job is won.
Can OdooBots implement Odoo ERP for construction businesses?
Yes. We have delivered construction and project ERP implementations including NEXG and PV Constructions, covering BOQ management, procurement, project execution, billing and financial reporting.
